The Man who bestowed us His creatures with different charism/gifts is Jesus our Lord. He it was Whom Pilate presented to the irate crowd of the Jews in these terms: “Here is the man” (John 9:5). And among the owners of the Kingdom, the second Person, the Son of God alone was made Man. Jesus is therefore the Master, Benefactor, the Gift and the Giver. To each of us He entrusted a portion of His gifts to be administered and invested according to the intention of the owner.
Those who understood or appreciated their master’s intention on the gift or talent given to them labored to realize this intention and the Giver of talents blessed their efforts with profit. The Lord blesses laborers, efforts and sacrifices made out of love for His name.
Matthew reports that the two servants, who received five and two talents respectively, promptly went and traded with the talents. They were prompt in appreciating their master’s trust, prompt in understanding his intention and prompt in embarking on the realization of his intention. The attitude of the servant who received a single talent is absurd “He dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money” (Matt 25:18).
Talent is not meant to be hidden but to be discovered, appreciated and invested. Every position, state or circumstance is like a card/talent received. The Lord of gifts blesses with success every genuine effort made in investing and caring for the talents received.
Every believer falls under one of the three servants of the generous landlord. Every believer, group or community has been entrusted with talents to be administered according to the Lord’s intention. At opportune times, reports of how the talents had been invested and difficulties encountered and accounts of profits made must be rendered to the owner of the talents. The believer’s attitude to what he/she is entrusted with and what the person has to show for is a picture of what the person thinks of his master.
What a great honor awaits servants who did not betray the master’s trust! What a great confidence God has in each of us. In all of us, God made His greatest investment.
"May you be witnesses to Mercy!" - St. John Paul II
“The Church must profess and proclaim God’s mercy in all its truth,
as it has been handed down to us by revelation... The Church lives an authentic life when she professes and proclaims mercy- the most stupendous attribute
of the Creator and of the Redeemer- and when she brings people close to the sources of the Savior’s mercy, of which she is the trustee and dispenser.”
(Dives in Misericordia, p. 38)
The Characteristic of our Charism is to always offer up all our prayers, works and sufferings in union with the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, for mercy upon poor sinners especially those who have lost their trust in God’s goodness and to proclaim the mercy of God through our words, deeds and prayer.
In community life, the power of the Holy Spirit at work in one individual passes at the same time to all. Here not only does each enjoy his own gift, but makes it abound by sharing it with others; and each one enjoys the fruits of the other's gift as if they were his own. (St. Basil in Vita Consecrata, 42)
